Pirates Return from Mid-Season Break with 10-0 Victory Over Surrey Bears
NORTH DELTA, BC - June 23, 2026
After a 16-day layoff brought on by graduation commitments for seven senior players, the North Delta Pirates returned to the diamond Tuesday evening looking to regain their rhythm. They did just that, using a dominant fifth-inning explosion to defeat the Surrey Bears 10-0 in a mercy-rule victory after five innings. The win marked North Delta's fourth victory over the expansion Bears this season and came at an important point in the campaign as the Pirates continue their push for one of the eight provincial championship berths.
There was little indication early that the game would end so quickly. Despite controlling the play, the Pirates managed just a 2-0 lead through four innings as they shook off the rust from the lengthy break. Surrey received a solid early effort from their starter, but North Delta remained patient at the plate, drawing walks and consistently putting pressure on the Bears' defence while waiting for the breakthrough inning.
That breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion in the fifth. The Pirates sent wave after wave of hitters to the plate, erupting for eight runs to put the game out of reach. Payton Harper sparked the rally with a two-run double, Eliaz Murti added an RBI after drawing a bases-loaded walk, Scott Ormston delivered a two-run single, while Tevin Bentley and Connal Grant each drove home runs with base hits. Fittingly, Noah Grant ended the evening in dramatic style with a walk-off RBI double that scored Calvin Mattu, clinching the 10-0 mercy-rule victory.
North Delta's pitching staff was equally impressive. Liam Jones set the tone with two scoreless innings to open the game before newcomer Jack Utsunomiya delivered a breakout performance in relief. Making the most of his opportunity, Utsunomiya worked two outstanding innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four of the six batters he retired to earn his first victory with the Pirates. Murti also contributed a scoreless inning as the trio combined to blank the Bears and complete the shutout.
Offensively, several Pirates enjoyed productive nights. Tyler Conway and N. Grant each collected two hits, while Harper, N. Grant, and Ormston finished with two RBIs apiece. North Delta also demonstrated exceptional discipline at the plate, drawing nine walks and forcing Surrey's pitchers to work throughout the contest. Defensively, the Pirates were flawless, committing no errors behind their pitching staff, with Matthew Sarkessian leading the club behind the plate.
Beyond the final score, the victory carried added significance in the Provincial Championship race. The Pirates entered the game holding onto the seventh position in the provincial standings, with the top eight teams qualifying for the championship tournament later this summer. Every victory is critical at this stage of the season, and Tuesday's performance provided both valuable points and renewed momentum following the extended break.
With the regular season entering its final stretch, North Delta will now look to build on Tuesday's convincing performance when they host the Chilliwack Cougars this Sunday. While the Pirates have experienced an inconsistent first two-thirds of the season, their combination of quality pitching, reliable defence, and explosive offensive potential makes them one of the most dangerous teams in the league when firing on all cylinders. If Tuesday's performance is any indication, the Pirates appear ready to make a strong push toward securing their provincial berth, and few playoff-bound teams will relish the prospect of facing them in July.
