Pirates Earn Crucial Split Against Victoria Seawolves in Sunday Doubleheader
The North Delta Pirates battled through an emotional and hard-fought doubleheader against the Victoria Seawolves on Sunday afternoon, earning a split with a 9-5 extra-inning loss in the opener before responding with a determined 2-0 shutout victory in the nightcap. Facing a key matchup with Provincial Championship implications, the Pirates showed resilience throughout the day and demonstrated the character that has kept them among the contenders in BC Minor’s 18U AAA standings.
North Delta struck first in Game 1, taking an early 1-0 lead when Lucas Stebbings delivered a ground ball that brought Tyler Conway home. Victoria answered in the second inning before breaking the game open in the third with four runs to seize a 5-1 advantage. Despite the deficit, the Pirates refused to fade. Scott Ormston delivered a remarkable relief performance, throwing four scoreless innings and giving North Delta an opportunity to claw its way back into the contest. At the plate, Conway led the offensive effort with two hits, while Stebbings, Jack Riley, Payton Harper, and Conway each drove in a run.
The Pirates' persistence finally paid off in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 5-4, North Delta completed its comeback when Riley delivered a clutch hit that scored Harper from second base, tying the game at five and energizing the home crowd. Unfortunately, the momentum was short-lived. Three eighth-inning defensive miscues contributed to a four-run Victoria outburst, allowing the Seawolves to reclaim control and secure a 9-5 victory in extra innings. While the result was disappointing, North Delta's ability to erase a four-run deficit highlighted the team's determination and competitive spirit.
Knowing the importance of salvaging a split and protecting their position in the standings, the Pirates turned to ace Noah Grant in Game 2. N. Grant responded with one of the finest performances of the season, authoring a complete-game, 103-pitch shutout. The right-hander scattered six hits over seven innings, struck out eight batters, and consistently worked out of trouble to keep Victoria off the scoreboard. His dominant outing provided exactly the kind of leadership and composure the Pirates needed following the opening-game setback.
North Delta supplied N. Grant with all the offense he would require in the second inning when Stebbings was rewarded for his lead-off triple when he scored from third on a passed ball. The Pirates then protected the slim 1-0 advantage with flawless defense and timely pitching throughout the afternoon. In the sixth inning, the Grant brothers combined to add an insurance run when N. Grant singled home Connal Grant from second base, extending the lead to 2-0. N. Grant finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles, an RBI, and two stolen bases to cap an outstanding all-around performance.
The Pirates' defensive effort in Game 2 was equally impressive. North Delta played nearly error-free baseball and C. Grant, Stebbings and Conway turned a brilliant 5-3-6 double play while supporting their ace on the mound. The almost-clean defensive performance stood in stark contrast to the extra-inning struggles of Game 1 and demonstrated the team's ability to quickly regroup and refocus.
While the Pirates would have preferred a sweep, Sunday's split may prove significant as the season progresses. After enduring the frustration of letting Game 1 slip away, North Delta responded with urgency, discipline, and championship-calibre pitching in Game 2. The victory allowed the Pirates to maintain their position in the standings and continue their pursuit of a Provincial Championship, while reinforcing the resilience and determination that have become hallmarks of this year's club.
