From Mercy Rule to Miracle Rally: Pirates Sweep Cougars

NORTH DELTA - June 28, 2026

The North Delta Pirates kept their playoff hopes moving in the right direction on Sunday, sweeping a determined Chilliwack Cougars squad in a pair of very different contests. The Pirates opened the afternoon with a commanding 13-3 mercy-rule victory before rallying from three runs down in their final at-bat to earn a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win in extra innings. While the standings may have suggested a comfortable afternoon for North Delta, the Cougars proved to be a resilient opponent, forcing the Pirates to battle until the very last swing of the day.

Game one belonged to North Delta from the outset. Payton Harper continued his outstanding season at the plate, collecting three extra-base hits—including two doubles and a triple—while driving in three runs to pace a balanced offensive attack. The Pirates scored three times in the opening inning, added to their advantage in each of the next two frames, and then broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to invoke the mercy rule. North Delta finished with 11 hits, six stolen bases, and showed patience at the plate by drawing six walks. Tyler Conway, Noah Grant, and Jack Riley each contributed multiple hits, while Eliaz Murti earned the victory and Scott Ormston closed out the contest to earn the save.

If the opener was comfortable, the nightcap was anything but. Chilliwack refused to go quietly, building a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh and leaving the Pirates down to their final three outs. With pitching options running thin, position player Tyler Conway took the mound in relief and delivered exactly what his team needed, retiring the Cougars in order in the seventh inning to keep North Delta within striking distance.

The Pirates started the bottom of the seventh with a strike-out and a ground-out, quickly finding themselves down to their final out. That's when the two-out rally began - a rally that was also started by Conway when he singled on a hard ground ball to short. You could feel the Pirate spirits lift as hope returned. N. Grant then doubled, advancing Conway to third and Harper headed to the plate representing the game-tying run. Harper then doubled, scoring both Conway and N. Grant and the Pirates rally caps were fully on. A Lucas Stebbings double then scored Harper and the game was tied 5-5. With the pressure mounting on the Chillwack pitcher, two more North Delta players reached on back-to-back walks before the Cougars finally ended the bleeding on a on a pop-out to right.

North Delta and Chilliwack headed into the eighth knotted at 5 but the tide had clearly turned in the Pirates favour. Conway came back out to pitch the eighth and got three straight outs to give North Delta a chance to walk off the game. And walk it off they did. Tevin Bentley started the inning with a single and Paul Stringer moved him into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Bentley then stole third on a 3-1 count, setting the stage for one final piece of heroics. First-year infielder Connal Grant calmly dropped a perfectly placed bunt single, allowing Bentley to race home with the winning run and completing one of the Pirates' most dramatic victories of the season.

The offensive leaders were plentiful throughout the second game. N. Grant and Conway each collected three hits, while N. Grant also stole four bases. Harper drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, Stebbings delivered the game-tying hit, and Bentley added two hits before scoring the winning run. Yet perhaps the most fitting finish belonged to the younger players. After the senior core engineered the comeback, it was Bentley, Stringer, and C. Grant who combined to manufacture the walk-off run, showcasing the depth and composure developing throughout the Pirates' lineup.

The two victories could prove pivotal as North Delta continues its push toward a berth in July's Provincial Championships. Sunday's sweep not only strengthened the Pirates' position in the standings but also demonstrated the two qualities every championship contender needs: the ability to win convincingly and the resilience to fight back when the odds appear stacked against them. If the opener showcased North Delta's explosive offense, the finale reminded everyone that this team has the grit to believe until the very last out.
