Ready when the big moment arrives …
Calvin Mattu — #21
Pitcher | Infield | 6’0”, 170 lbs | Bats/Throws: Right/Right | Hometown: Surrey, BC
Every baseball player remembers a moment that makes the sport feel permanent. For Calvin Mattu, it came with two strikes, runners on second and third, and a provincial championship on the line. As an 11-year-old, he drove a walk-off double to win the title — a swing he still carries with him because it confirmed something important: he enjoys pressure.
Now entering the 2026 season in his first year with the North Delta Pirates, Mattu brings a decade of experience and a competitive mindset shaped through multiple programs, including Whalley Little League, the Surrey Canadians, and the Whalley Chiefs. Each stop has added to his development, but his identity as a player has remained consistent — team-first, energetic, and driven to improve.
On the field, Mattu contributes as both a pitcher and infielder. His game is built less around flash and more around approach. Coaches notice his attitude immediately: positive, engaged, and focused on the next play. He communicates well with teammates, supports others in difficult moments, and leads by example through effort. He identifies leadership, teamwork, and attitude as his strongest attributes, and they show in how he competes each inning.
Mattu also emphasizes coachability. He listens, applies instruction, and actively works to refine his mechanics and decision-making. He wants scouts to know he gives full effort every game and is serious about development. He’s a player committed to getting better rather than staying comfortable.
Away from baseball, Mattu enjoys golfing, a sport that complements his concentration and patience. In the classroom, he brings the same discipline. He works hard academically, approaches school with respect and focus, and is motivated by the goal of reaching the next level both as a student and an athlete.
Although this is his first year with the Pirates, he already values the opportunity and aims to contribute to the team’s culture. He prides himself on supporting teammates and maintaining a positive environment, believing strong teams are built on trust and shared effort.
As the 2026 season begins, Calvin Mattu arrives as a player whose energy can be felt in a dugout and on the field. With leadership qualities, steady competitiveness, and a commitment to improvement, #21 looks to grow with the program, and, as he has before, be ready when the big moment arrives.
