From Nail-Biter to Rout: Pirates Explode for 37 Runs in Statement 2-Game Sweep of Surrey Bears
SURREY, BC - May 23, 2026
The North Delta Pirates delivered an unforgettable offensive showcase Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against the Surrey Bears with dramatic 11–9 and 26–0 victories. The pair of wins pushed the Pirates further up the standings and highlighted both the resilience and explosive offensive depth developing within the club as the season moves deeper into the provincial playoff race.
Game one proved to be anything but routine. North Delta appeared firmly in control after building a commanding 10–1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning. The Pirates had pieced together strong at-bats throughout the afternoon, getting contributions from across the lineup while steadily extending their advantage inning by inning. Tyler Conway continued his hot streak with another productive game, while Scott Ormston and Paul Stringer helped pace the offense with timely hits and aggressive baserunning.
But the Bears refused to go quietly. Surrey erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to suddenly cut the deficit to 10–7, creating a dramatic shift in momentum heading into the seventh. North Delta responded with an important insurance run in the top half of the inning, only to see the Bears continue to rally in their final at-bat. With Surrey closing the gap to 11–9 and threatening with runners at the corners and one out, the Pirates turned to ace Noah Grant to slam the door shut.
Head coach Jeff Stebbings made the decisive move to the bullpen, and N. Grant delivered in dominant fashion. Surrey countered with pinch hitters in consecutive at-bats, but N. Grant responded by striking out both hitters to end the game and preserve the hard-fought victory. It was a fitting finish to a game that showcased the Pirates’ ability to withstand pressure and execute in key moments. Conway and Stringer each collected three hits in the opener, while Ormston and Conway drove in two runs apiece. Stringer also impressed on the mound, providing three important innings of relief work.
If game one tested North Delta’s composure, game two became a full-scale offensive eruption. The Pirates exploded for 10 runs in the opening inning and somehow found another gear in the second, piling on 13 additional runs in one of the most dominant offensive displays of the season. Hit after hit rolled through the lineup as North Delta consistently squared up baseballs, pressured the defense, and aggressively attacked the basepaths.
By the end of the afternoon, the Pirates had secured a staggering 26–0 victory behind 20 hits and relentless offensive pressure. Conway and Lucas Stebbings led the charge with monster performances, each driving in five runs. Conway finished the game with three hits, including multiple doubles, while Stebbings added three hits of his own and continued to impact the game in every phase. North Delta also stole 11 bases and played error-free defense, demonstrating complete control from start to finish.
Saturday also marked a breakout day for several of the Pirates’ younger players. First-year contributors Stringer, Connal Grant, Calvin Mattu, and Ormston all played major roles across the doubleheader. Stringer turned heads in game one with a 3-for-4 performance that included two runs scored and an RBI, while also leading the team in innings pitched. In game two, C. Grant collected three hits and drove in a run, Mattu added three more hits and several key RBIs, and Ormston capped off an outstanding day by finishing 4-for-8 across the twin bill with five runs scored and three RBIs.
Across both games, Conway and Stebbings combined for an astonishing 11 hits, nine runs scored, and 13 RBIs, helping fuel one of the Pirates’ most productive offensive days of the season. More importantly, North Delta displayed two different qualities essential to winning baseball: the composure to survive adversity in a tight finish and the confidence to completely overwhelm an opponent when momentum swings in its favour. With the club continuing to develop depth throughout the lineup and on the mound, the Pirates now carry significant momentum into their upcoming matchup against the Cloverdale Rangers on Sunday at Mackie Field.
