Pirates Clinch: North Delta Secures Provincial Berth with Split in Kelowna

KELOWNA - July 18, 2026

The North Delta Pirates are headed to the 2026 Provincial Championships. Needing just one victory in their final three regular season games to secure their place among British Columbia's top eight teams, the Pirates earned a hard-fought split against COMBA on Saturday, falling 3-1 in the opener before responding with a composed 7-4 victory in Game 2. When Eliaz Murti fired the final strike past the COMBA hitter with the tying run standing at the plate, the tension that had built over the past two weeks finally gave way to relief. There was no dramatic celebration or dogpile on the field—just quiet satisfaction … and a bit of relief. The Pirates had accomplished the first part of their mission. Hundreds of kilometres away, the hopes of Victoria, Ridge Meadows and North Shore, all chasing the final provincial berth, quietly came to an end as North Delta secured its 19th win of the season.

The opening game was a tightly contested pitchers' duel that saw both teams receive strong performances on the mound. Liam Jones returned to action after a fairly lengthy hiatus and gave the Pirates a chance to win, allowing just two runs over three innings while striking out three. COMBA capitalized on a pair of timely hits in the third inning to build a lead, and despite another aggressive effort on the basepaths, North Delta couldn't generate enough offense to overcome the deficit. Tyler Conway paced the Pirates with two hits, while Tevin Bentley and Noah Grant each swiped multiple bases as North Delta stole seven bases in the contest. The 3-1 loss meant the pressure would carry into the second game, with the Pirates still needing that elusive nineteenth victory.

Rather than allowing the moment to become overwhelming, North Delta responded exactly as well-coached teams do. The Pirates wasted little time grabbing control of Game 2, manufacturing two first-inning runs before adding insurance in the third behind patient at-bats and timely hitting. Every inning carried added importance knowing what was at stake, yet North Delta played with the calm confidence of a team determined to extend its season.

Jack Utsunomiya continued what has become one of the season's best late-story developments. The right-hander delivered another outstanding performance, allowing just three unearned runs over six innings while scattering seven hits, striking out four and earning the biggest victory of his young Pirates career. Just as impressive, he contributed at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to help lead the offense. After joining the club midway through the season, Utsunomiya has quickly become a dependable contributor on both sides of the ball at exactly the right time.

The Pirates' lineup once again demonstrated its depth. Payton Harper, Scott Ormston and Connal Grant helped spark early rallies, while Utsunomiya's timely hitting stretched the lead. COMBA mounted a late push, bringing the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but North Delta never lost its composure. Murti entered to close the door, recording the final outs before striking out the last batter of the afternoon to preserve the 7-4 victory and send the Pirates to provincials.

For a team that has battled injuries, illness and inconsistency throughout the season, Saturday's result was a fitting reward for months of perseverance. There were moments during the summer when the Pirates' postseason hopes appeared uncertain, yet they continued to respond whenever their backs were against the wall. The past several weeks have tested the club's resilience more than any stretch this season, and Saturday's victory was another example of a group refusing to let its goals slip away.

With the pressure of qualifying now behind them, the Pirates can turn their full attention toward preparing for the challenge ahead. One regular season game remains Monday against the Chilliwack Cougars, but North Delta will approach it with a different mindset. The objective now shifts from simply earning a provincial berth to building momentum for the tournament itself. With a deep lineup, improving pitching staff and renewed confidence, the Pirates have shown they are capable of competing with any team in the province. Their ticket has been punched. Now the pursuit of a provincial championship truly begins.
