Pirates Drop Pair to Seawolves, Shift Focus to Provincials
VICTORIA - July 19, 2025
The North Delta Pirates entered the weekend clinging to hope of claiming top spot in the 18U regular season standings. But after a tough doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Victoria Seawolves on Saturday, that dream is officially on hold. With their sights now set squarely on the upcoming provincial tournament — the club’s ultimate goal all season — the Pirates are looking to regroup and make a statement when it matters most.
In Saturday’s first game against Victoria, the Pirates were stymied by a dominant performance from Seawolves ace Lane Huggins, who tossed a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 Victoria win at Lambrick Park. Huggins struck out 14 and didn’t issue a single walk, while also collecting two hits at the plate. North Delta starter Dakota Simicak battled through six innings, striking out nine, but was tagged for four runs on seven hits. Kesler Curtis led the Pirates offensively with a 2-for-3 day, but North Delta couldn’t cash in, stranding multiple runners and failing to score.
The second game followed a similar script as the Seawolves capitalized on key moments and Pirates miscues en route to a 6-0 victory. Victoria struck early on a first-inning balk and then broke things open with a four-run sixth. North Delta’s Cole James worked three gritty innings but issued six walks, and the Pirates’ offense couldn’t break through against Ian Feldhuhn, who tossed six shutout frames. Tevin Bentley paced North Delta with two hits, and defensively the Pirates played clean baseball, committing no errors.
While the weekend results effectively end the Pirates’ chase for first overall, the team has remained clear-eyed about its true mission: contending for a provincial banner. With that tournament just around the corner, North Delta turns the page quickly and will look to rebound on Sunday as they host the Tri City Thunder.
