In a Battle of the North, Pirates Split with Cubs after Thrilling Game One Comeback at Mackie Park

NORTH DELTA, B.C. — Fresh off the momentum of a successful poker night fundraiser that saw 80 community members and partners come together to celebrate, the North Delta Pirates took to the diamond early Sunday morning for a doubleheader against the visiting North Island Cubs at Mackie Park. In a tale of two tightly contested ballgames, the Pirates edged out a dramatic 4–3 comeback win in the opener before falling 3–1 in a well-pitched second game, bringing their regular-season record to an impressive 10–2.

Game one saw the North Delta Pirates claw their way back after an early 2–0 deficit, when a double for the Cubs scored two players in the top of the first. The Pirates responded with grit and timely hitting, eventually taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a clutch two-run single by Kesler Curtis. Curtis led the Pirates offense with two RBIs. His offence was supported by hits from Connor Wilson, Eliaz Murti, Payton Harper, Noah Grant, and Noah Saunders.

On the mound, Grant turned in a four-inning performance, striking out five while allowing no earned runs. Murti followed with a dominant relief outing, shutting the door over the final three innings to earn the win. Together, the duo held North Island to three hits and no earned runs across the game.

In the second half of the twin bill, the Pirates' were limited on the score sheet despite out-hitting the Cubs 4–1. North Island capitalized on early miscues and took a 3–0 lead on a sac fly in the third inning. Tyler Conway’s RBI in the bottom of the fifth got the Pirates on the board, but they couldn’t mount a comeback this time.

Dakota Simicak turned in a gutsy complete-game effort for North Delta, giving up just one hit over seven innings and striking out seven. His counterpart, Nolan Cathcart, matched him with five strong innings, fanning nine and allowing no earned runs in the win.

The North Delta Pirates will look to carry their form into their next matchup on the road against the North Shore Lions on May 10th.
