North Delta Pirates Split Doubleheader in Chilliwack After Gritty Game One Win, Tough Game Two Loss
CHILLIWACK — The North Delta Pirates left Fairfield Island on Saturday with a hard-fought doubleheader split, edging out the Chilliwack Cougars 6–4 in the opener before falling 7–4 in the second game of the day.
Game One: North Delta Pirates Hang On in Nail-Biter
In game one, the North Delta Pirates built a 5-run cushion by the fifth inning and had to weather a late Chilliwack comeback to secure the win. Clutch hits from Connor Wilson and Payton Harper helped fuel North Delta’s early offense, with Wilson sparking the second inning with an RBI double and Harper adding to the tally with an RBI-scoring double in the third and an RBI-scoring single in the fifth.
On the mound, Liam Jones set the tone with a solid three-inning start, allowing just one run while fanning three and earning the win. Eliaz Murti was dominant in relief, slamming the door with three scoreless innings of no-hit ball while Noah Grant came in part way through the seventh to eventually earn the save..
Cole James continued his hot start to the season with a 3-for-3 performance, while Wilson and Harper each notched multiple RBIs. Despite a late push from Chilliwack—who chipped away at the lead with a trio of RBIs in the final innings—North Delta’s defense held firm to preserve the 6–4 win.
Game Two: Chilliwack Cougars Pounce Early, Hold Off North Delta Pirates
In the back half of the twin bill, it was Chilliwack who struck early and never looked back. A two-run single in the first inning set the tone, and Chilliwack poured it on with a four-run second, capitalizing on RBI knocks from three different players.
The North Delta Pirates showed signs of life at the plate, with Lucas Stebbings driving in a pair and James adding two more hits to his impressive day. The Pirates worked seven walks and showed good discipline, but couldn't fully claw back from the early deficit.
Dakota Simicak was tagged for six runs in one-and-two-thirds innings, but reliever Kesler Curtis settled things down, striking out four over three strong innings of one-run ball.
The Pirates played clean baseball defensively throughout both contests, not committing a single error in either game.
Looking Ahead
With the doubleheader split, the North Delta Pirates move to 3-and–1 on the season. They'll look to build momentum on Sunday as they return home to Mackie Field for a doubleheader showdown against the Cloverdale Rangers.
First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
